1. Leshan Giant Buddha, Sichuan Province

The Leshan Giant Buddha is the tallest and largest in the world at 71 meters (233 feet tall). Constructed of this statue of Maitreya began in 713 and finished in 803. Carved into a sandstone cliff face, the statue is in the Mount Emei scenic area in the Sichuan Province in China. The rivers Min, Qingyi, and Dadu meet and flow beneath the feet of the statue. You can reach the Buddha by boat, train or bus.
